Ablation Q & A

What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive gynecological procedure that cauterizes the lining of your uterus (endometrium) to reduce or eliminate heavy menstrual flow. The procedure doesn’t require incisions, as your doctor inserts special tools into your uterus to gently remove its lining.

Am I a good candidate for endometrial ablation?

After reviewing your medical history and completing an exam, your gynecologist lets you know if you’re a good candidate for ablation. The procedure might be a good fit if you suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding and other treatments haven’t worked.

Ablation usually isn’t recommended if you're postmenopausal, would like to have children in the future, or have certain gynecological conditions.

What should I expect during the endometrial ablation procedure?

The team of gynecologists at Rockville Gynecology use the most innovative technology during ablation procedures.

Treatment is minimally invasive, done under IV sedation, and painless. It is performed in a relaxed and comfortable environment right in the office and often takes less than 10 minutes to complete. After treatment you might experience:

  • Cramps
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Light bleeding

These symptoms can last for a few days or weeks. After several months you’ll notice the final result of ablation -- which is lighter periods or no bleeding at all.

While pregnancy isn’t likely after ablation, it can still occur. Pregnancy after ablation may end in miscarriage, so it’s important to use additional forms of birth control.

Don’t let heavy menstrual bleeding prevent you from enjoying life to its fullest. Call Rockville Gynecology for an ablation consultation or book an appointment online.
